With its miles of coastline, abundance of rivers and streams, and endless wooded hills and valleys, Connecticut is an ideal place to set up your tent, fit out your cabin or park your RV for a scenic camping vacation. Not sure where to start your planning? Here are just a few of the ways to go.
State Parks and Forests
There's a lot to love about the 14 Connecticut state parks and forests that offer camping. Better still, Connecticut’s park camping options range from saltwater sites to hideaways in the Litchfield Hills.
Private Campgrounds
Connecticut’s private campgrounds range greatly in size, style, amenities and location, from one end of the state to the other.
Land Preserves
Some of Connecticut’s most beautiful, secluded acres exist within its many private land preserves – and some of them offer camping.
Rustic Cabin Camping
The State of Connecticut now offers rustic cabin rentals within many state parks. The cabins are 14 feet by 17 feet with two rooms (and a front porch) and can sleep six – no kitchens or bathrooms. Stay for a week or two and you’ll truly feel light years away from home.
Camping in an Amusement Park
Lake Compounce Campground is a new feature of Lake Compounce Amusement Park in Bristol. After you’ve enjoyed the features of the amusement park, your family will be able to retire to the campground, with its tent and RV sites, huts, and cabins. There are even deluxe tipis that can sleep up to five.
Pet Friendly
Since most pet dogs suffer from extreme FOMO (fear of missing out), it’s good to know that an increasing number of Connecticut campgrounds and RV resorts have rolled out the welcome mat for them.
Over the Top Glamping
Finally, there’s Connecticut’s ultimate version of “glamping” as offered by Winvian Farm in Morris, where each luxury accommodation has its own theme.
- The Camping Cottage here consists of 950 square feet, inside/outside wood burning fireplaces, a Jacuzzi tub and steam shower. Inside, there’s a king-sized tented bed and the arched ceiling shows stars at night.
- There’s also the Treehouse Cottage suspended 35 feet off the forest floor and the Log Cabin (where you won’t have to read by candlelight). Roughing it never had it so good!
